Surveillance is the monitoring of behavior. Surveillance is the actual process of monitoring the behavior of people for conformity to expected behavior for security or social control.
The word surveillance literally means "watching over" in french, but the word is used for all forms of observation or monitoring, not strictly visual observation. The all-seeing "eye in the sky" is still a general icon of surveillance. Surveillance in many modern cities and buildings often uses closed-circuit television cameras. Although surveillance can be a useful tool for law enforcement and security companies, many people have concerns about the loss of privacy.
The word surveillance is typically used to describe observation from a distance by means of electronic equipment or other technological means. For example:
- Miniature cameras
- Closed-circuit television
- Night vision for covert monitoring during the night
- GPS tracking usually place on a vehicle
- Computer and internet surveillance
Surveillance will also usually include the low-tech, old school methods such as direct observation, observation with binoculars, social engineering, or various other methods.
